...Janet thinks only the best will do for her ewes so she's been quite picky about the boys she will introduce them to. Not only do the tups (rams) have to be 'fit', but they have to match her high expectations of a perfect body (conformation) with statistics that stack up too!
A national database used by pedigree breeders to record their flocks assigns EBVs (estimated breeding values) to each ram. This information is analysed and used by shepherds like Janet to select the specific traits required for their own flock's genetic progress. At Plan Farm, Lleyn tups are selected to breed suitable females to enter the main flock as ewes, whilst Hampshire Down tups are selected for muscle depth and growth rates.
As for the ewes, they don't mind about the statistics but they do like the look of these two hunks!
