Plan Farm
Brian and Janet, with sons Edward and George, moved to The Plan Farm from Somerset in 1994. Sheltered by the high tops of the Isle of Arran mountains, and benefiting from the mild climate associated with the Gulf Stream, The Plan is ideally suited to extensively rearing premium quality grass-fed livestock which live outside the year round.
Comprising over 1500 acres and with around five miles of shore line, the farm is home to 200 beef cows and their progeny along with 750 ewes. Since 2000, native breeds of both cows and sheep have been introduced in order to match the animals to the environment and to produce the meat eating flavours which come naturally from free ranging, grass-fed animals.
Today all the livestock on the farm are home-bred (except the bulls and rams), and the farming system is traditional, environmentally sensitive and closely follows the ethos of organic.
Janet takes care of the sheep work while Brian manages the beef herd with help from sons Edward and George at calving time. The farm has been one of the first Quality Meat Scotland's Monitor Farms where the benefits of pasture improvement through minimal use of fertilisers has been carefully examined. Since coming to the farm in 1994, miles of fences and gates along with ditching, draining and bracken control have all contributed to an extensive farming system where animals live happily outdoors all year round.
